Hypothermia and Heat Exhaustion

This week  and last week me and my class have been learning about Hypothermia and Heat Exhaustion. we have been lurning about this because we are going a class camp to authers pas and we want to stay safe when we are there. I have done a writting for each one.

Emperor Penguin

 This week for literacy we have been reading a book called Penguins. We did a report about the Penguins. I worked with Libbie we did the Emperor Penguins. They are really cute.

Emperor Penguin

Habitat

Emperor Penguins are only found in Antarctica. They live in Antarctica because they are used to the cold temperature. These Penguins breed and raise their young mostly on fast ice.

Behavior

Emperor Penguins are highly social, they all feed and live in large groups. Although they remain with one mate during the breeding season. They normally always pair with the same mate during the next breeding season.

Lifecycle

Emperor Penguins typically live up to 15 - 20 years in the wild. Some of the Emperor penguins have been recorded living up to the maximum lifespan of 40 years. They go from eggs and when they crack they grow from over the years.

Food 

Emperor Penguins feed on Silverfish as well as other species of fish krill they also eat Squid. They eat 2-3 kg per day, on good days they eat twice this much to build up their  body fat for the long winter or for feeding their Baby’s.

Threats 

The greatest threat to Emperor Penguins is climate change, climate change is due to changes in the sea ice they depend on, they depend on it because the food that they eat is in the water.They also have other Threats they are Sea Lions and orcas. If they get too close to them they can get killed.

            This week my reading group have been  reading a 

book called: Harakeke.

How to weave a Harakeke Flower

 

Purpose: We are  Learning how to weave a flower so we can have it as a decoration.

Equipment Flax or Palm Leaves ( 1 per flower ), Scissor’s , a  Needle and Little beads or shells.

Steps to make 

1. Split the flax in half (from the sharp point down) but leave about 15 cm still joined (leave longer if you want a longer stem)

2. Lie the flax flat on a table and start by crossing the left leaf under the right one.  Then fold that now left one back under the right one.

3.Then continue to fold the one that’s now on the left under the right one, and you are going to keep doing this same pattern until you get to the end.  So, to recap, always fold the one that is on the left under the one that’s on the right.

4.Eventually, you will get to the end of the leaf and because of the way the folds work it ends up in the shape of a flower.

5.Pull it around in a circle quite tight so that it almost looks like a rose.  Then you want to get your pieces of shell or paua, needle and nylon.

6. Thread through the leaf and then through your shell or bead.  Thread back to the backside of the flower and then to the front again and continue to         the back again – knot it off.

7. As mentioned earlier these can make a neat little gift as you can pop them in a box and post them – could be a great gift idea for the grandparents!

 This week for literacy we read a story about "Great Barrier Reef" This story was very intresting is showed heaps of the differnet types of corals. My group done two activites, we made a fake tourest poster and we chose a type of coral and done some facts.

Dolphins

 This week me and my class had to choose a sea animal , we had to make a slide and talk about the habitat and why they are suited to the Ocean and not a lake or stream.

Dear Organizers

Hi my name is Riley, I understand why you don’t want any girls in the rugby tournament. I think that you should let girls play, they can be good at rugby, you know. Here are some reasons that girls should be allowed to play rugby.

Reason 1. When girls play rugby they feel really strong which is a good thing.

Reason 2. They might just be better than the boys and if they are in the team they could win.

 This week my reading group has been reading a article called: 'One city-two earthquakes.' by Jenna Tinkle.

This is a safety kit if there is a earthquake. I have included  a frist aid kit, food soap, cat and dog food ,toothpaste,hair brush and water.

This is what I have been reading this week in literacy time. It is called timber which is another word for wood. I hope you enjoy.

 

Dear Mayor Gibson

I think that trees are important because they give us wood and building materials

like house, fences, to make a fire  and keep you warm. 

If we cut so many trees then we will not have Oxygen and if we have no trees then

you would not be alive right now.

Tree planting is an amazing thing to do for the environment.

First you need to find the best spot in your yard. Then you dig a big hole and put the

seeds in. Then you put the dirt bake on top and put a bit of water on the dirt. Then

after about 1 month then it should grow.

Problems about Planting Trees 

The problem about planting trees is that trees can take over 100 years to grow.

People say that they think it only takes 2 years but that is not true. 

Solution- in my opinion I think they should stop cutting down so many trees.
